Two years ago, the internet was a buzz with news of the latest installment in Sam Raimi’s Evil Dead franchise. We all knew it was going to happen but of course, there weren’t many details.

Then in an interview with Diabolique last summer, Ash Williams himself and one of the producers of the forthcoming film, Bruce Campbell spilled the beans on the highly secretive endeavor stating that Irish director, Lee Cronin (The Hole in the Ground) had been tapped to helm the feature and its official title was Evil Dead Rise. Later on, he divulged that the setting would take place in an urban locale or as he put it, “no more cabin in the woods.”

The fact that the Dark Ones were on the move had many entertainment sites speculating that the action would take place in a high rise building hence the title of Cronin’s script. Campbell also stated that the hero of the venture would be a woman and that she would be fighting to keep her family out of harm’s way.

Eventually, we learned this year that production would take place in New Zealand and that it would be going through New Line which released the original Evil Dead in 1983.  On a recent episode of The Projection Booth Podcast, Bruce stated that the venture was going to begin shooting in May.

This is awesome news for horror fans. More than likely, Evil Dead Rise will be released in 2022 which also happens to be the year when Sam Raimi’s Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness is set to premiere on Mar. 25.

It will be interesting to see who will be cast in Cronin’s effort. Stay tuned because the closer the cameras get to rolling is probably when we will hear who the next Deadite slayer will be…

You can catch Bruce Campbell this weekend on Stellar (9 PM ET/6 PM PT) as he hosts the Evil Dead 2 Watch Party. For ticket information, click here.
